Visa Koivunen received his D.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of  Oulu, Finland. He has been a full professor of signal processing  at Aalto University Finland since 1999. He held the academy professor position in 2010-2014. He was a post-doc (1992-1995) and adjunt full professor (2003-2006) at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. Since 2006 he has been a part-time visiting fellow at Princeton University, USA, and spent multiple sabbaticals there.
 
Dr. Koivunen’s research interest include statistical signal processing, wireless comms, radar, multisensor systems, data science and machine learning. He has published more than 400 scientific papers in international scientific journals and conferences and holds 6 patents. He has advised 28 Ph.D works. He has authored multiple papers receiving best paper awards, including the IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award in 2007 and second time in 2017.  He was awarded the 2015 European Association for Signal Processing Technical Achievement Award. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. He served as IEEE SP Society Distinguished Lecturer in 2015-2016, and has given more than 50 invited talks in world leading research universities and institutes.
