Marko Turpeinen

Marko Turpeinen is also the Principal Scientist and the leader of the Digital Content Communities research group at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT), which is a joint research institute of Aalto University and University of Helsinki. His research addresses issues in customized media content, active computer-mediated communities, ageing society, and the role of media in promoting sustainable development. Marko was a Professor of Media Tehnology at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) during 2006-2013.
He has extensive industrial experience from the media industry, as between 1996 and 2005 he worked in various executive positions at Alma Media Corporation, a Finnish media company. Marko Turpeinen has a Doctor of Technology Degree in Computer Science from Helsinki University of Technology (TKK, now Aalto University) and a Master of Science Degree in Media Arts and Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he also worked s a researcher at the MIT Media Lab. He was also a Visiting Scientist at the University of California, Berkeley in 2009-10 in School of Information (I School) and International Computer ScienceInstitute (ICSI).
When not working Turpeinen likes to exercise outdoors, sail, play computer games, and cook for friends and family. He is born 1968, lives in Espoo, Finland, with wife and two children
