
Juanjo Hierro is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the FIWARE Foundation and Chairman of the FIWARE Technical Steering Committee.
FIWARE is an Open Source initiative whose mission is to build an open sustainable ecosystem around public, royalty-free and implementation-driven software platform standards that ease the development of new Smart Applications in multiple sectors. The FIWARE platform combines components enabling the connection to the Internet of Things with Context Information Management and Big Data services on the Cloud.
He is also strongly involved in activities of the fast-growing Open and Agile Smart Cities (OASC) initiative as one of the people that helped to found it. The OASC initiative is aimed at creating a Digital Single Market for Smart Cities, based on the adoption of common mechanisms enabling portability and interoperability of services in cities.
His leading role in several open source initiatives has allowed him to gain a deep understanding about the open source phenomena and the implications/challenges of creating an open source community.
Juanjo has participated as invited speaker in workshops, congresses and events and have authored several scientific papers. I have also been invited as expert in several workshops setup by the European Commission to help defining technological objectives of some EU strategic programmes.
