Destination Earth and synergies with AI factories
Europe’s investments in digital technologies, supercomputing, and artificial intelligence are transforming our ability to predict, adapt to, and respond to climate and extreme event challenges. Two flagship EU initiatives – Destination Earth (DestinE) and the AI Factories – exemplify this transformation. DestinE is building highly accurate digital twins of the Earth system and pioneering new methodologies to harness unprecedented volumes of resulting high-resolution data, delivering actionable insights for climate adaptation, resilience, and preparedness. DestinE’s digital twin data also serves as prime material for advanced AI models, with rapid progress toward an AI-powered Earth system model, by leveraging EuroHPC resources.
The AI Factories, and upcoming GigaFactories, will further amplify these capabilities by exploiting AI-ready datasets from DestinE’s digital twins and other European datasets to create a new generation of AI-driven applications supporting climate action across diverse domains.
ECMWF, one of the entities implementing DestinE, will present the Digital Twin Engine—the core software infrastructure that manages the production, handling, and access of high-resolution weather and climate data on distributed EuroHPC systems. The session will also introduce the open-source Anemoi framework, developed by ECMWF and several National Meteorological Services across Europe, which provides a comprehensive framework for producing AI-ready data, training, and deploying weather and climate AI models, including ECMWF’s advanced AI-based forecasting system (AIFS).
The panel discussion will explore the strategic synergy between DestinE and the AI Factories, focusing on how high-quality AI-ready data, domain-specific software solutions like the Digital Twin Engine and Anemoi, and AI-optimized HPC empower industry and the public sector to develop, test, and scale next-generation AI-based climate solutions on Europe’s most powerful platforms. This synergy is key to advancing sovereign European capabilities in AI and supporting climate resilience and adaptation by transforming vast Earth system data into actionable, AI-driven intelligence.
