Big Data Value PPP networking sessions, The role of Big Data in the Digitalisation of the Transport Industry
Smarter and more flexible production, a better use of resources, new standards and a changing work environment are just a few aspects associated with the Digital Industry. The digital transformation will be a game changer coming with new chances and challenges. As such, new initiatives are needed to strengthen the international leadership of the European industry and to prepare it for the future. The digital transformation will affect almost all industries and our everyday lives. Although the term has become popular, the industry still has some way to go. Linking the real with the digital world takes more than adding software to hardware. To a large extent companies lack the fundaments. This is especially valid in the transport industry, where Big Data, Internet of Things, 5G, ICT-based automation systems and service platforms will play a pivotal role. They enable connectivity, monitoring, analysing, simulating, optimising and controlling production processes. Thus, a virtual copy of the physical world is created, providing unprecedented opportunities for applying big data technologies to deliver improved operational efficiency, better customer experience and new business models for the transport industry.
In this landscape, the objective of this special session springs by the firm belief that bringing together knowledge and solutions of major European ICT and Big Data technology providers together with the competence and experience of key European industry players in the mobility and logistics domain, is needed, so as to demonstrate a measurable increase of productivity and impact in the transport industry, covering all transport modes, sectors and stakeholders together with their relevant data.
By leveraging synergy and learning effects among the aforementioned areas, this special session is expected to contribute to studying the needs, opportunities and barriers for utilizing big data towards the digitalization of the transport industry.
