Europe has taken a leading position globally in re-defining the rules for personal data management. Although the most visible aspects of this come from regulation such as GDPR, there are significant initiatives originating from Europe that are fostering a fair data economy. We discuss how these developments that aim to not only secure individual privacy, but also to empower individuals regarding personal data, are evolving.
