HPC and Big Data, BDVA Workshops
Delivering real-time insights generated from extreme big data requires an integrated research view across the generation, processing and consumption of data i.e. high performance compute (HPC), big data (BD) and internet-of-things (IOT) technologies. This session will explore the major issues of commonality and the potential for advancement. Discussions will illuminate research priorities to amplify synergies across the computing domains of high-performance, big data and edge. Several speakers from industry and research institutes/academia will share thought-provoking perspectives and insights on emerging trends. The session is expected to be highly interactive e.g. attendee contributions, Q&A dialogue, etc.

SESSION ORGANISERS
- Jim Kenneally (Intel Corporation)
- Michael Malms (IBM)
SESSION SPEAKERS / CONTRIBUTORS
- Jim Kenneally is Principal Investigator at Intel Corporation’s research labs. Jim is a BDVA BoD member and chairs BDVA’s subgroup on Big Data and HPC related technologies and services. The subgroup’s mission is to advance topics of mutual interest between HPC and Big Data ecosystems.
- Michael Malms is ETP4HPC Project Manager at IBM Research. ETP4HPC is the European Technology Platform for High Performance Computing. It is an industry-led think tank comprising of European HPC technology vendors, research centres and end-users.
- Thomas Hahn is Chief Expert Software at Siemens AG. Thomas is also a member or board member on various committees, including the OPC Foundation, BDVA, Openlab CERN, Platform Industrie 4.0, and The Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation (AIOTI). AIOTI was initiated by the European Commission in 2015, with the aim to strengthen the dialogue and interaction among Internet of Things (IoT) players in Europe, and to contribute to the creation of a dynamic European IoT ecosystem to speed up the take up of IoT.
- Mark Asch is Professor of applied mathematics Université de Picardie and Scientific Expert at Total R&D, Paris. Mark is a leading member of the Big Data and Extreme-scale Computing (BDEC) forum. BDEC is premised on the idea that we must begin to systematically map out and account for the ways in which the major issues associated with Big Data intersect with, impinge upon, and potentially change, the national (and international) plans that are now being laid for achieving exascale computing.
- Marc Duranton is scientist at CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) and a member of the European Network on High Performance and Embedded Architecture and Compilation (HiPEAC). HiPEAC’s mission is to steer and increase the European research in the area of high-performance and embedded computing systems, and stimulate cooperation between a) academia and industry and b) computer architects and tool builders.
