The European Health Data Space (EHDS) has emerged as a visionary concept that aims to revolutionize healthcare related reseach by harnessing the power of data. The EHDS envisions a secure and trusted environment where health data can be collected, shared, and analyzed across borders, fostering collaboration and innovation. The recent proposal of the European Parliament for the regulation of the EHDS seeks to create a legal framework that addresses the challenges associated with data interoperability, data protection, and data governance, ensuring that health data is used for the benefit of patients, healthcare professionals, and society as a whole. In this session, we will bring together speakers from several European healthcare institutions to engage in a comprehensive discussion on the opportunities and challenges surrounding the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and the newly proposed regulation. Our objective is to explore these topics from both technical and legal perspectives while also providing insights from healthcare institutions key layers in data sharing.

Key questions:

  • What are the potential benefits of the EHDS for healthcare delivery, research, and policy-making?
  • How does the EHDS proposal promote collaboration and innovation within the healthcare ecosystem?
  • How can the harmonization and availability of health data contribute to improved patient outcomes, personalized medicine, and evidence-based decision-making?
  • How does the EHDS leverage technologies and standards, such as the OMOP Common Data Model, to promote data interoperability and harmonization?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing these technologies on a large scale?
  • How does the regulation address concerns related to data protection and individual rights?
  • How does the EHDS proposal align with existing data protection regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)?
  • What are the implications for organizations and healthcare providers in terms of compliance and data governance?
  • How does the EHDS proposal address ethical considerations related to the use of health data?

The session will finish with a round table where attendees will have the opportunity to engage in interactive discussions, pose questions, and explore potential collaborations related to the EHDS proposal.
