Big Data Technologies – Key to Energy System Transformation
Renewable energy generation capacities are rapidly growing in most of the EU member states. Due to the fluctuating character of solar irradiation and wind matching electric power demand is challenging. Fulfilling the CO2 emission targets of the Paris agreement requires that in future not only the electricity sector gets renewable but also the heating and cooling sector (domestic, commercial, and industrial) and the transportation sector are supplied with renewable energy. Thus, sector-coupling and multi-modal energy system design and operation will be the next steps in transforming fossil fuel-based energy systems to renewable ones. Innovative business models based on big data technology, blockchain and digital currencies will be key to cost-efficiently matching generation and demand in such multi-modal energy systems.
