Data, AI, and Interoperability: Shaping the Regulatory Sandbox Ecosystem for Innovation
The panel aims to explore the synergies between various types of regulatory sandboxes, highlighting their distinct objectives, tools, and added value, while examining the critical role of data spaces in building a cohesive regulatory sandbox ecosystem. Special attention will be given to the regulatory sandboxes for AI and those under the Interoperable Europe Act, as key examples of this ecosystem interaction.
The Interoperable Europe Act sandboxes focus on fostering public sector innovation, enabling collaboration between public administrations and private actors to test cross-border interoperability solutions. In contrast, the AI Act’s sandboxes are designed to promote safe AI innovation, providing businesses with a controlled environment to test AI technologies while ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
Beyond identifying synergies, the panel will discuss entrance criteria, assess their relevance to both the AI Act and the Interoperable Europe Act, and explore how data spaces can drive innovation and compliance within these frameworks. To achieve these goals, the panel will draw on the expertise of the International Expert Group on Regulatory Sandboxes for AI and insights from public sector stakeholders to ensure a well-functioning sandbox ecosystem that supports secure data sharing, interoperability, and innovation in AI.
